Udupi town has eight Mathas together known as Astha Mathas (religious institute) and they are Palimaru, Adamaru, Krishnapura, Puttige, Shiroor, Sode, Kaniyuru, Pejavara. Each Matha is headed by a seer or Swamiji who gets the Shri Krishna Pooja Rights on a traditional rotational basis known as Paryaya.
The Forthcoming Udupi Paryaya Mahothsava is scheduled to be held from early morning on January 18th, 2022.This time Shri Shri Vidyasagaratheertha Swamiji of Shri Krishnapura Matha who is taking over Sri Krishna Pooja rights will take a holy dip at Danda Theertha near Kapu and thereafter will come to Jodu katte, where the rituals are carried out. The Paryaya procession to Shri Krishna Matha will be led by Paryaya Swamiji seated on a palanquin followed by other Swamijis.Colourful cultural shows mere in the procession. Thereafter in front of Shri Madwacharya handing over of Akshaya Pathra and keys of shrine to the Paryaya Swamiji and there after he will be seated on Sarvajna Peetha by the out going Swamiji. Afterwards formal Darbar of the Astha Matha Swamijis held in Badgu Malige. A public function and durbar will be held at Rajangana for the benefit of devotees attending the festival.
